Video calibration instructions:
Before beginning the HDTV calibration Reset the TV and DVD/Blu-ray settings, and set the lighting conditions of the room to the typical lighting during TV use. For example if you watch the TV most of the time in a dark room preform the calibration in a dark room and vice versa.
Calibration order:
1. Contrast - White level
2. Brightness - Black level
3. Color - Saturation
4. Sharpness - Edge enhancement
5. Aspect ratio
6. Overscan
Calibration steps:
1. Adjust the contrast setting until the 10 lightest colors can be separated clearly and the most extreme color is pure white (does not has any color tint to it).
Example:
Correct contrast |
Contrast too high |
Contrast too low |
2. Adjust the brightness setting until the 10 darkest colors can be seperated clearly and the most extreme color is pure black.
Example:
Correct brightness |
Brightness too high |
Brightness too low |
3. Adjust the color setting until the color stepping can be clearly seen and all the colors are bright (the two central colors should be fairly indistinguishable).
Example:
Correct color |
Color too high |
Color too low |
4.Adjust the sharpness setting until the lines have a single sharp edge, not too blurry and without extra detail (i.e. "ghost" edges).
Example:
Correct sharpness |
Exessive sharpness |
5.Adjust the aspect ratio until the circle is perfectly circular and not an ellipse (note: only for 16:9 aspect ratio).
Example:
Incorrect aspect ratio setting |
Correct aspect ratio setting |
6. Put the TV in pixel by pixel mode or turn of overscan, the arrows on the pattern should be seen.
Example:
No overscan |
10% overscan |
5% overscan |
Audio calibration instructions:
Place all the speakers in the correct positions, the Right and Left speakers should be positioned at an angle of 22-30 degrees relative to the listening position and the Rear surround speakers should be positioned at an angle of 90-40 degrees relative to the listening position, the Center channel should be positioned directley in front of the listener.
Example:
Before starting the calibration test consult the A/V receiver manual for the audio delay setting. While listening to the calibration video change the delay on the tested channels until the channels sound uniformly, they should sound as if they are at the same distance.
Performance test videos:
Use the performance test videos for testing the quality of the video and 5.1 surround audio calibration.
Use Big Buck Bunny for testing high detail (grass) and cool colors (blue sky and green grass and trees).
Use Sintel for testing warm colors and black levels.
